The pain of back pain almost always makes it seem worse than it is. The most worrisome causes of back pain rarely cause severe pain, and many common problems (like slipped discs) are usually much less serious than people fear. Only about 1% of back pain is ominous, and even then it’s often still treatable. Most of the 1% are due to cancer, autoimmune disease, or spinal cord damage.
People understandably assume that the worst back pain is the scariest. In fact, pain intensity is a poor indicator of back pain ominousness,10 and some of the worst causes are actually the least painful (especially in the early stages). For instance, someone could experience the symptoms of cauda equinae syndrome, and be in real danger of a serious and permanent injury to their spine, but have surprisingly little pain — even none at all in some cases!
The new emphasis on hands-on treatments has made therapeutic massage more widely available. “Doctors are seeking us out now,” says Dolly Wallace, president of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA). I would never give an ultimate recommendation until I could see your spine, palpate your muscles, and see your framework, gait, and posture. Overall, if your muscles are not too tight and stringy, chiropractic work is beneficial if it is combined with massage. (I only go to chiropractors who use heat, stretching, and massage before they make their adjustments.) Nerves aren’t nearly as vulnerable to pressure as people generally think — most of them can actually take quite a licking and keep on ticking without a single symptom — but they aren’t invulnerable. Push hard enough in the wrong place, and you can injure a nerve, of course. In a 2017 incident, a woman’s radial nerve was crushed by an aggressive massage in her upper, inner arm. It’s rare, but it happens.14 Elements Massage in Baker Street, London

It’s agreed that Traditional Thai Medical Massage (as it was then known – or ‘nuat phaen boran thai’ – literal meaning: ‘the old Thai way of healing with the hands’), was founded in India by a man called Jivaka Komarabhacca (also known as Shivago, or ‘Father Doctor’).
